Saturday 2nd May – judge Amand Golle

It was my privilege and pleasure to judge this event which was for the Inaugural Perpetual trophy to be known as the “RESTRICTED RISING STAR” Trophy in memory of Marg Sullivan’s Golden Retriever bitch, TOPBRASS WOS MACY, handled by Wendy Michalk and was tragically lost to us all. This little dog showed above average potential, and will be remembered for the talent she displayed in her very short career as a retrieving dog.

On arrival to the trial site, Jerry Willkinson who is the property nominee and was also the trial manager, showed me the area which he allocated for the Restricted Stake on Saturday.

My wife Georgina, offered to bird steward for me, which gave me the opportunity to set runs which required precision in throwing birds as required. With a small field of 5, and excellent terrain on the Logan River.

My FIRST RUN consisted of a TWO BIRD test on land.
Long bird from right to left at approx 120 metres was cast onto a plateau at which the handler fired and sent the dog. Whilst returning with that retrieve and approx 50 metres from the handler the Two Bird was cast, in order to insure that the dog would see the bird and the handler could assist if necessary.
All dogs completed this test with various degrees of success. The top scoring dog was a G.S.P., FELDHUND PURDY BRONCO on 48 points.

The SECOND RUN from the bank of the river was a MARK into running water and a DOUBLE RISE on the river bank from which the handler shot at the game, with the firing point pegs set 10 metres apart. The handler with dog at heel fired at the Double Rise from the peg closest to the river, then relocated with dog at heel to the far peg and shot at a bird coming from under the bank into the river, at the sound of a Duck Call.
The order of pick up was last bird shot, “the water bird” followed by the Double Rise on the river bank.

Four dogs completed this test in various degrees of success, with one dog failing.
The top scoring dog was the Duck Tolling Retriever LIDLRIVA ONYX GUNDI on 44 points.

The THIRD RUN consisted of a MARK and a BLIND with dog and handler working from the river bed.
With dog at heel the handler was required to fire in the direction of the blind, which was placed on the slopping river bank and adjacent to a cluster of tobacco saplings at approx 65 metres.   On the report of the gun and a count of approx 4 seconds, the mark was cast from right to left at the firing point and the bird landing in mid stream approx 110 metres from the firing point. The dog required to porpoise for some distance then swim and eventually retrieving the bird from shallow water, having retrieving the mark the blind retrieve was to be negotiated.
Four dogs were tested and all completed the run in various degrees of success.
The top scoring dog was the G.S.P., FELDHUND PERAZZI on 45 points.

THE FINAL RESULT:-
1st        FELDHUND PURDY BRONCO (GSP) on 125 points, handled by Sam Haigh
2nd       FELHUND PEERAZZI (GSP) on 122 points, handled by Malcom Tyrie
3rd        LIDLRIVA ONYX GUNDI (Duck Toller) on 117 points,
handled by Rob Boodnikoff
4th        BEEREEGAN MIRANDA ROSE NRD (Labrador) on 100 points,
handled by Geoff Dawson

My congratulations to the five dogs and handlers on their efforts, and the handlers assistance and sportsmanship.

Very special thank you to Georgina for her excellent assistance.
Jerry Wilkinson for the use of this great property and his assistance.

CONGRATULATIONS to F.R.A. for conducting this successful event over the two days.

Sunday 3rd May - judge Georgina Golle

This beautiful trophy to be contested over the two days of trialling to the highest scoring Restricted dog, was sponsored by Margaret Sullivan, the breeder and Wendy Michalk, owner and trainer, in memory of a beautiful Golden Retriever bitch, TOPBRASS WOS MACY (Macy) which was never to fulfil her great desires to retrieve due a very tragic loss.

It is our great pleasure to have been invited to judge the Restricted Stakes over the week end, featuring this Inaugural Trophy as it had been our pleasure to judge this Golden Retriever in the early stages of this dog’s trialling career, and we could see the potential to achieve at the highest level in our sport.

Due to recent heavy rainfall the nominated trial site had to be abandoned and the trial relocated to Woodhill on the LoganRiver.
The area allocated to me encompassed a gully and a dam with interesting features in shape, depth and regrowth around the edges of reeds and swampy grass.

Run 1 A Double Rise of 90metres where the dogs had to negotiate a gully, cross a plateau and retrieve the bird falling into a depression not seen by the handler.
The small entry of 5 dogs all completed this run with scores ranging from 50 to 43 points. The highest scoring dog was GSP FELDHUND PERAZZI, which showed good marking ability, great style and purpose in his retrieves.

Run 2 – A Double Mark, with the first bird being cast onto a plateau at a distance of 50 metres and the second bird into the dam at a distance of 90 metres.
Again the dogs tackled the run in good style, whilst none took the direct line into the water, this retrieve was done with sagacity.
Memory on the short bird was very good, with 4 dogs completing this run.
Scores ranged from 52 to 45 points. The highest scoring dog was Duck Toller LIDLRIVA ONYX GUNDI, which was a delight to judge due to the dog’s enthusiasm and desire to bring back the birds.

Run 3 – A Two Bird and Blind. This run was set across the narrow end of the dam through reeds and swampy grass. The mark was cast at a distance of 120metres on land into a light covering of grass. The second bird was cast when the dog had turned to return to the handler at the firing point. This bird fell on the opposite bank on land, and once the dog had returned with the first mark, had to cross the dam at a distance of 50 metres to retrieve the second bird.
The blind was placed at the end of the dam on the opposite side to the Two Bird at a distance of 70 metres. Again I saw good dog work, with more work needed to school the dogs on handling techniques. Two dogs completed the 3 runs with the highest score on this run to, the Duck Toller, LIDLRIVA ONYX GUNDI,which executed this run in a most workmanlike manner, handled well on the blind and was a joy to judge.

In summary the 3 runs challenged both handler and dog and congratulations to all the competitors for their sportsmanship.

My appreciation to Amand for being the bird steward and Jan Dawon as gun steward.
